Nature Hopscotch (ages 2 and up)

You don’t need pavement for this classic blacktop game.

Supplies: A stick and rocks

Most people know the basic game of hopscotch. You can create your own hopscotch course by tracing the squares in dirt and tossing a rock on the square to skip. Played all over the world, here are some hopscotch games you might not know.

Variations

Kick Hopscotch. On your way back from home base, kick the stone sequentially back through the course on the return trip. It has to land in the next square without touching a line or rolling out.

Spiral Hopscotch. Play a French variantof hopscotch called escargot (snail) or marelle ronde (round hopscotch). It is played on a spiral course. Players must hop on one foot to the center of the spiral and back out again. If the player reaches the center without stepping on a line or losing balance, the player marks one square with his or her initials. From then on, that player may place two feet in his or her initialized or “owned” square while all other players must hop over it. The game ends when all squares are marked or no one can reach the center; the winner is the player who “owns” the most squares.

Heaven and Hell Hopscotch. Play itlike they do in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, where they most commonly call hopscotch Himmel und Hölle (Heaven and Hell). The first square is called Erde (Earth). The second to last square is the Hölle (Hell), and the last one is Himmel (Heaven). Besides your square with the rock, no one can step on the square of hell!

QuarterSquare Hopscotch. Create a course like those made in 1900. Along with single and double squares, in one large square, draw an X to divide it into four corners. Number these with the rest, dropping your stone and hopping on each in order.

Australian Hopscotch. In Australia, hopscotch is played in rounds. The first round is played by hopping per the standard rules. The next round is called “jumps,” and the player jumps into each square with two feet. The last round is called “sizzles,” and you jump into each square with your legs crossed. The first player to complete all three stages wins. Younger players can use “helps,” lines extended at the sides between squares 2 and 3 so little ones can get closer to throwing the stone into the required square.
